Guitar Care...

We want to help you get many years of "active service" from your guitar. If you have any questions regarding the care and maintenance of your instrument don't hesitate to ask one of our experienced and helpful staff for advice. Our professional guitar technicians here at the Music Spot can assist you with everything to do with guitars... from basic re-strings through to A Grade set-ups, modifications and repairs. Here are a few tips on how to care for your guitar. A little care and maintenance on an ongoing basis will help to keep your guitar in premium condition, giving you years of playing enjoyment and satisfaction. Some facts you should know...

1. A guitar's worst enemies are heat, sunlight and moisture... NEVER leave your guitar in the car for any longer than absolutely necessary. The extreme heat inside a locked car can cause the neck to warp and dry out the timbers and finishes causing cracks and possibly even softening glued joints. This can mean lifting bridges and bracing that comes away from where it should be. Wherever possible, keep your guitar in its case, out of direct sunlight.

2. DON'T leave your guitar leaning against the wall or bed... it can be knocked over easily... a guitar is a fragile instrument and a heavy knock caused by a fall can cause neck splice joints to fail or in extreme cases can actually break the neck away from the headstock. This will mean costly repairs! Again keep the guitar in its case or on a guitar stand when not in use.

3. Keep your guitar correctly tuned!... over tightening the strings not only causes premature string breakage but it also places undue stress on the guitar. This can lead to warped necks and lifting bridges. The best way to maintain correct tuning is with an electric guitar tuner. Using a tuner not only extends the life of your strings and helps to prevent damage to the instrument, it also makes your playing sound better.

4. Change your strings regularly... Guitar strings deteriorate from the moment you start playing them. Eventually they will break, but long before then, they go dead and become harder to keep in tune and lose their harmonic capacity. This means the guitar will sound flat and lifeless and "not quite in tune". To extend the life of your strings, make a habit of washing your hands before you pick up the guitar to play and wipe down each string individually with a clean dry cloth when you have finished playing. Its the acid in your fingers that causes strings to corrode! We recommend the following as a rule of thumb to string replacement... * Nylon string and bass guitars - change every 12 weeks * Acoustic and electric guitars - change every 4 weeks

5. Keep your guitar clean!... Dust can cause problems with the electric components on acoustic/electric, electric and bass guitars. Keep the guitar in its case when not in use. To maintain the finish of the instrument a good cleaning with a good guitar polish (such as Fender guitar polish) will keep your guitar always looking its best. Regular cleaning of metal parts such as machine heads and the bridge saddles etc. on electric guitars will help to reduce tarnishing and rusting and "gunking up" of important adjustment screws etc.
